The RBI Grade B exam is conducted by the Reserve Bank of India to recruit officers in the managerial cadre (Grade B), responsible for policy-making, economic research, financial regulation, and central banking operations.
RBI Grade B Officers start with a basic pay of ₹78,450/month, with a gross monthly salary of approximately ₹1,54,936 and an in-hand salary ranging between ₹1,20,000–₹1,30,000 per month after deductions, plus DA, HRA, and other allowances.
Indian citizens aged 21–30 years (relaxations apply) with a minimum 60% in graduation are eligible. Phase II streams include Economics, Finance, Management, Law, and Statistics.
RBI Grade B has 3 stages: Phase 1 (200 Q, 200 Marks, 120 min — Objective CBT), Phase 2 (Economic & Social Issues + Finance & Management — Objective + Descriptive, 300 Marks), and a Personal Interview (75 Marks).
Both are highly competitive. UPSC has a broader syllabus covering multiple subjects over 3 stages, while RBI Grade B is specialized in Economics, Finance, and Management — it's considered comparable in difficulty but narrower in scope and faster to qualify.
RBI Grade B officers progress through a structured career path with annual increments of ₹4,050 for the first 9 years, with promotions to Grade C, D, E, F, and G levels — up to Executive Director and Deputy Governor positions over a career spanning decades.
A minimum of 6–9 months of focused preparation covering Phase 1 (GA, Quant, Reasoning, English) and Phase 2 (ESI, Finance & Management, Descriptive English) is recommended, given the depth and breadth of the syllabus.
Yes, 0.25 marks are deducted for each wrong answer in Phase 1. Phase 2 is a descriptive/objective paper where negative marking rules may vary — attempt questions carefully.
RBI Grade B focuses on monetary policy, financial regulation, and central banking operations with higher pay (₹1.2L+ in-hand), while NABARD Grade A focuses on agricultural finance and rural development with a slightly lower pay (₹85,000–₹98,000 in-hand) — both are prestigious apex institution roles.
